Making the case for family law reform at #HRC57

Watch the livestream here, 25th September 2024, 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Geneva, UTC +2),

A window of opportunity for global mobilization towards family law reform has opened with a recent Resolution adopted by the Human Rights Council in October 2023. In light of 2024 being the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, the Council will also organize a “Panel on State´s Obligations on the Role of the Family in Supporting Human Rights of its Members” during the 57th Human Rights Council Session – and we will be there to highlight the urgency of family law reform on a global scale.

Women and girls all over the world are affected by discriminatory family laws and practices, and inequalities experienced in the family have many consequences.  It makes them more likely to experience domestic violence and undergo harmful practices like FGM. It restricts their right to education, employment, economic independence, and full participation in society. There is clearly an urgent need for family law reform, but progress has been painfully slow. In some countries, the situation has eve regressed over the past two decades.

UN Women’s Equality in Law for Women and Girls by 2030: a multistakeholder strategy for accelerated action identified promoting equality in family relations as one of the six areas of focus to accelerate action towards gender equality. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 5.1.1 of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has also identified family law as one of the four legal frameworks that must be reformed to accelerate progress to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (SDG 5) by 2030.
